Windows Server 2008 is built from the same codebase as Windows Vista and thus it shares much
of the same architecture and functionality. Since the codebase is common, Windows Server 2008
inherits most of the technical, security, management and administrative features new to Windows
Vista such as the rewritten networking stack, improved image-based installation, new security
features, the improved Windows Firewall with secure default configuration.
Editions of Windows Server 2008 include:
Windows Server 2008 Foundation (codenamed “Lima”; x86-64) for OEMs only
2) Windows Server 2008 Standard (IA-32 and x86-64)

UNIX
Unix is a family of multitasking, multiuser computer operating systems that derive from the original
AT&T Uni, development starting in the 1970s at the Bell Labs research centre by Ken Thompson,
Dennis Ritchie, and others. Unix was the first computer operating system that was written in a highlevel language (C Language). Unix provides a hierarchical file structure which facilitated fast data
access.
Linux
Linux is a Unix-like operating system created by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in
1991 A Linux “distribution” is a release of a Unix-like operating system based on the specifications
of the Linux kernel. The development of Linux was a landmark example of global, free and open
source software collaboration. Many companies and similar numbers of individuals have released
their own version of Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux Kernel. Currently the world’s
largest and most powerful data centres and scientific research centres use some “flavour” of Linux.
MAC OS X
MAC OS X is a series of proprietary graphical operating systems developed and marketed by Apple
Inc. since 2001. It is the primary operating system for Apple’s Mac computers. Within the market of
desktop, laptop and home computers, and by web usage, it is the second most widely used desktop
OS, after Microsoft Windows.
BSD
The Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) was an operating system based on Research Unix,
developed and distributed by the Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) at the University of
California,
Berkeley.
Today,
“BSD”
often
refers
to
its
descendants,
such
as FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, or DragonFly BSD, and systems based on those descendants.
Novell NetWare
Novell Network. NetWare is a network operating system developed by Novell, which allows the
networking of computers, be it DOS, Windows, Unix or Mac OS. NetWare had great success in the
