Most treatments and medical interventions often have a “one-size-fits-all” approach,
making them useful for some patients and excluding others. This scenario has fostered new
innovative techniques in disease prevention, treatment, and precision medicine, considering
people”s environmental, lifestyle, and genetic differences (Meiliana, Dewi & Wijaya, 2016).
Therefore, personalized medicine involves using advanced knowledge of biological
mechanisms, genetic factors, and multiple unique considerations to make healthcare effective
for all individuals. As such, personalized medicine holds a critical potential in improving
healthcare quality. Principally, personalized medicine refers to medical treatment tailoring
based on patients’ characteristics, relying on scientific breakthroughs (Savoia et al., 2017).
Personalized medicine increases the capability of the traditional approaches in disease
treatment, helping to equip healthcare professionals with precise tools for treatment, and
improving outcomes.
Personalized medicine has revolutionized how individuals manage, identify, and think
about health issues, having an integral impact on patient care and clinical research. One
example of personalized care in combating diseases is apparent in its use in cardiovascular
disease in creating a gene expression profiling test (“The Age of Personalized Medicine,”
2011). This test has promoted medical insights, identifying the probability of heart transplant
patients rejecting a transplanted organ. Consequently, genetic diagnostic and non-invasive
tests have been developed to manage patients’ care after transplants. One personalized
medicine’s pro is associated with care efficiency due to increased informed decision-making
capability on treatments. One con is the extensive infrastructure requirements and long
implementation time.
