What is ART?
ART is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form
such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
According to Aristotle, “Art completes what nature cannot bring to a finish. The artist gives us knowledge of
nature’s unrealized ends.” Michael Angelo said, “Art is the true work of art is but a shadow of the divine
perfection.” And Paul Cezanne stated that “Art is a harmony parallel with nature.” Art can generally be classified
into two: the directly functional and indirectly functional art. Functional art refers to art that we use in our daily
lives as tools, architectural structures, roads, bridges, buildings, furniture, kitchen utensils, coins, bills, dress,
weapons, etc. On the other hand, indirectly functional art refers to the arts that are “perceived through the sense”
such as fine arts, painting, music, sculpture, dance, literary piece, theatrical performances and the like. We do not
use their arts literally to live and survive, but they accompany us in expressing ourselves. This art is basically
used to inform, educate, and entertain people. It is there to change our lives and become productive citizen in the
community.
What made art relevant is its grasp towards the needs of the humankind. “Art serves basic human needs.”
Artistic functions can be classified into four: aesthetic, utilitarian, social and cultural. It functions aesthetically
when it becomes instrumental for man to be cognizant of the beauty of nature. It serves this function when it is
utilized to give comfort, convenience to human beings. It is used to serve the basic needs of man such as food,
shelter, clothing, medicine, comfortable environment, transportation, entertainment, communication and
expression and other important things that make man live with happiness and ease. When art bridges connection
among people, it serves a social function. Art inspires affiliation, rapport, harmony, accord, collaboration and
support. With this people become more understanding and sympathetic that would somehow create a better
society. Art serves as an aperture towards skill, knowledge, attitudes, customs and traditions of different groups
of people. The art helps, preserves, share and bring different groups of people from the past, present and in the
future. People share a common means of expressing their thought and feelings that is through arts like music,
dances, literary pieces, decorative arts, paintings and drawings, sculptures and others. These forms of art are used
to create and reinforce our strong relationship as one family, one race and one nation. These are profound mode
of unfolding images, revealing depths of imagination and call for unity and reconciliation.
Our country’s anthem, for instance, is there to bind us; to make us feel that we are one in our dreams and
mission. Monuments and other historical heritage remind us of our past, the struggles that each one shared, and
the unity we formed in the name of freedom. Further, the art expressed through festivals depict each tribe’s culture
that needs to be expressed for common understanding. In contrast, art can also be used to communicate mutiny
and rebellion. For instance, the work of Rizal in his book “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” extends his
utmost disagreement with the Spaniards’ control over the Filipinos. Art is forever. It is always there, any moment
that we want to see, we can see. In other words, art is alive because it will never die. It is present in every corner
of the world to serve basic needs of mankind, from ancient time to modern world. Further, art is timeless because
it continually evolves. Aside from artists birthing new artworks, they also never stop innovating, recreating,
reinventing and reviving works of art. Classical music, for instance, never fades and goes out of style. It
continually invades our time – listened and appreciated by many. It remains strong because it became a witness,
a company, a reflection and journal of our forefathers’ young lives.
Art defines time. In watching film, for example, even when you do not have the idea when it was created,
the style of directing and filming, the clothing and bearing of the characters, musical scoring and the setting and
the plot of the story would make the viewers guess the period when it was produced. While art defines time, time
also defines art. it identifies the artwork that would “click” in a particular time for the particular audience. Art is
everywhere. Here and there, you can find art because they are universal. Through directly functional and indirectly
functional arts, we are provided with a variety of offerings – comfort, entertainment and education, which would
somehow lead us to self-fulfillment and satisfaction. Art is not nature, it is the results of creative and artistic
imagination of man, who have the highest intellectual reasoning. It is a unique creation that may reflect a profound
skillfulness and craftsmanship. It undergoes process and planning: a result of study and research revealed.
Art is artificial because it is just an imitation or even appropriation of ideas, thought, feelings, and
emotions that are communicated in creative and artistic ways. Further, arts are made to adore and acknowledge
the wonders of life, the awe of God’s creation and the commemoration of our experiences. Art can never be
natural, nature is evanescent, in constant transformation of change, and yet art is permanent, it does not change
by itself, unless manipulated by its creator. Art can only capture a limited point that can be conveyed to the
audiences. The beauty of nature is innate and silent. It doesn’t ask for attention since it is naturally part of it, while
it is true that beauty in art demands human attention for it leads us to its valuation. Remember, “beauty is in the
eye of the beholder.” Art is representation of our experiences, a good source of learning. As it is saying in a
famous line in learning that, “experience is the best teacher. It teaches us to appreciate, but it teaches as well to
reject. The only way to find conviction and affirmation in art is thorough immersion to the arts. We can only
appreciate art if we spend time to look at it, listen to it, tough it and feel its presence. Making art is not a contest
or a competition; it may be utilized to strengthen one’s identity as individual because we have a very unique
personality that cannot be compared to others. Art is not just showcasing talents, to share stories and unfurl
mysteries. Further, art is utilized either to influence and convince, or to destroy and unshaped one’s belief.
