Two Coca-Cola employees were engaged in a task conflict. The two employees were
arguing about who was supposed to deliver several crates of soda to a client. One of the employees
claimed that it was not his duty to carry crates of soda. He argued that the other employee was
responsible for the task. However, the other one said that he had not been hired to carry the crates
of soda. Both employees did not want to carry the crates of soda to the client. The crates would be
carried from the ground floor to the client’s apartment in the fourth floor. The two employees were
drivers of a Coca-Cola delivery truck. They often argued that clients were supposed to pick their
goods from the trucks. However, the company required them to deliver goods to the customers’
doorstep.
The two employees eventually decided to resolve their task conflict by agreeing to perform
the tasks. The conflict management strategy that was used was collaboration. Collaboration is used
when individuals are cooperative and assertive. Both employees worked with each other to come
up with a win-win solution. They decided that they would divide the work among themselves.
Both of the employees would share the work equally and carry the crates to the client’s apartment.
The task conflict was resolved easily when the employees worked together.
The participants would have done several things differently to achieve a better outcome.
First of all, they should have listened to each other actively. Listening to each other would have
helped identify the specific problem and come up with the solutions. They should also have
analyzed the conflict. The two participants should have worked together They should not have
blamed each other or avoided responsibility. They should also have been creative in resolving the
conflict. There should have been more cooperation between the participants. There was need to
clarify the issues. The two employees should have known whether or not they were responsible
for the task.
