In general, one might describe an institution as an established or
organized society, an organization, company, or establishment,
particularly one that is of a public character or whose operations have an
impact on a community. A foundation, a philanthropic organization, a
sports club, or a literary body are all examples of possible types of
institutions.
According to Vernon Van Dyke, “an institution is any permanent system
of activities and expectations or any stable pattern of group behavior.” In
other words, an institution is both.
A basic characteristic of an institution is that its offices, agencies, and
the employees affiliated with it are organized in a hierarchy. This
implies that certain authorities and duties are delegated to each office,
agency, and member of staff that is linked to the organization. It also
implies that the people or the community that are likely to be affected by
the functioning of an institution anticipate that the institution’s offices,
agencies, or personnel will function in accordance with the respective
powers and functions that have been assigned to them.
