Question 1
Discuss how the process of constructing and applying definitions of deviance is a moral
enterprise?
Moral enterprise is a procedure of constructing and applying definitions of deviance.
It focuses on moral aspects as it focuses on the construction of bad and good. The most
important feature of moral enterprise is to withdraw moral convictions from past years
based on self-assumption
. It relies on the sensation of authenticity beyond the probability of likelihoods. Moral enterprise
includes the maintenance of moral meaning and its connection to particular conditions or actions.
It also focuses on procedures included in creating awareness of problems and trailing them to move
into the statue-book. Therefore, deviance can be defined and labeled with expectations of the the
dominant group that is considered embraced belief and behavior.
Question 2
Using examples from the readings, discuss the role of moral entrepreneurs and how they work to
make and apply rules.
According to the reading, the main role of moral entrepreneurs is to persuade the
community to reinforce and develop laws that are reliable with moral beliefs. These entrepreneurs
are committed to enforcing and establishing laws against behaviors defined as deviant. The main
goal of moral entrepreneurs is to ensure coercive or assimilated reform. Moral entrepreneurs make
and apply rules by crusading the track of policies, laws, and rules against repulsive behaviors. The
success of moral entrepreneurs relies on the wider support of the public. They also mobilized
strength and perceived these aspects as a strength or moral problem. Therefore, numerous roles
influence moral entrepreneurship. It ensures the formation of outsiders whose performance
violates the rules and regulations and is also subject to the contemptuous label of deviance.
Question 3
Using examples from the readings, how can differential social power impact how some groups
resist the deviant label.
Differential social power influences the way some groups resist the deviant label. Social
groups create deviance by making laws whose violation makes deviance, and applying these laws
to specific persons labels them as outsiders. According to Chambliss, Saints get engaged in
delinquent behaviors compared to good boys engaged in teenage mischiefs. Labeling often causes
denial from non-deviant peers. Moreover, labeling might cause removal from collaboration with
non-deviant persons that might result from deviant self-idea. People labeled as deviant might
desire to find an association with those who have a deviant self-idea. Higher class people contain
higher social power that ensures the behavior with norms. Some ruffians originate from the worse
side of tracks and are delinquents and agitators. The behavior of adults tolerates middle-class
people with the same behavior affianced in lower class adults. Therefore, society restricts deviance
by using sanctions that aid in sustaining the scheme of social regulation.
