Discipline of sociology
Because of modernity, the discipline of sociology came into being, and
the ideas of many of its most influential people in both the nineteenth
and twentieth centuries may be interpreted in a variety of ways
depending on how one responds to the emergence of the modern world.
This is especially true of the timeless works that were produced by
Durkheim, Marx, and Weber.
As we will see in the next chapter, there are those in the modern
world who hold the belief that throughout the course of the most recent
few decades, a new set of social changes has once again revolutionized
the globe. We should realize that the world of modernity has been
superseded by a new world, which is the world of postmodernity,
because the circumstances in which we live now and the ways in which
we think – particularly the ways in which we think about ourselves – are
so completely different from those described by the theorists of
modernity such as Durkheim, Marx, and Weber.
