Economic nationalists
Another earlier theory that influenced some more recent ways of
thinking about development was that of the economic nationalists in
India (particularly Dadabhai Naoroji and R. C. Dutt), who argued that
India was being deliberately “underdeveloped” or systematically
impoverished as a result of colonial rule. This theory can be found on
page 8 of John Harris’s Development Theories. Their thoughts had a role
in the subsequent development of what is now known as “dependence
theory,” primarily via the more direct effect of Paul Baran’s book The
Political Economy of Growth (1957), in which their views are
mentioned.
