The automotive industry has been expanding electrical engineering jobs. I would like to
work as an electrical engineer in the automotive industry. I would want to get involved in circuit
engineering, electrical distribution systems, infotainment systems, 3D design and safety systems
in cars. That is because of my interest in cars and design. My plan for the starting point of my
career is to be a graduate electrical engineer at General Motors. The final milestone included in
the plan is to have an engineering consulting firm.
Becoming a graduate electrical engineer at General Motors in UAE would the first
milestone. The company requires individuals to have valid driving licenses. The licenses are
necessary due to the testing of various cars that are to be assembled. The first interim step would
be to ensure that one has a valid driving license (Santore, 2021). The driving license can be
renewed by paying the required amount. When renewing the driving license, one could face the
challenge of slow services from the government organization. This would be resolved by ensuring
that the driving licenses are renewed on time.
One would need to obtain training for helpful skills such as automotive engineering,
AutoCAD and Visual Basic. Automotive engineering training would be necessary because the job
would be in the automotive sector. One would need to acquire AutoCAD skills for designing
various objects and vehicles (Santore, 2021). When obtaining the necessary training, the challenge
would be lack of resources for learning. That would be resolved by organizing all resources needed
to acquire various skills.
An important interim step in becoming a graduate electrical engineer at General Motors
would be to get the certifications. One might need certifications depending on the company that
they work. Some of the certifications that might be needed are Professional Engineer and Six
Sigma Certification. It might take three months to get the necessary certifications (Özkul et al,
2020). One might have to deal with the challenge of failing to qualify for various certifications
that are needed. They would have to work hard to ensure they qualify for the necessary
certifications.
The second milestone would be to be an electrical engineer specializing in automotive. One
of the important interim steps would be to get three years’ experience as an engineer. These would
be obtained by working for a minimum of five years as a graduate engineer at General Motors.
Getting the relevant experience could be a challenge as one might have to secure the job position
first (Santore, 2021). The challenge of securing a job position would be resolved by working well
at the graduate engineer level to be retained by the company.
The second interim step would be to get the additional certifications that are required. One
might have to show that they are knowledgeable in model-based design, vehicle architecture,
electric motor design, MATLAB and Simulink (Özkul et al, 2020). Professional exams for
engineers might have to be completed to show that one has mastered the required skills. The
challenge would be failing in the exams and tests. One could avoid failing by mastering the
required skills.
The final interim step for becoming an electrical engineer at the company would be to
enroll in various online programs such as electric cars and industrial automation. One would need
to learn about electric cars and industrial automation to enter the automotive industry as an
electrical engineer (Özkul et al, 2020). That would be challenging as one would have to study
during the weekends when they are free. It could be difficult to multitask; however, good time
management would ensure that one has adequate time to study the online programs.
Starting an engineering consulting firm would be the last milestone. The first interim step
would be to get accredited by the accreditation firm. One may not offer consulting services if they
are not licensed and the firm accredited. Getting accredited might require one to show that they
provide quality services (Anca et al, 2020). One might also need to prove that they have the
required education and qualifications to start an engineering consulting firm. They could face the
challenge of lacking some necessary qualifications, meaning that they have to get the missing
qualifications first.
The second interim step would be to obtain experience in consultation. One needs to have
at least 5 years’ experience to be an engineering consultant. The experience can be gained by
working as an engineering consultant in the electrical field (El-Sherif, 2020). One might face the
challenge of lack of clients that have engineering needs. This can be resolved by conducting
efficient advertising to get clients and discuss their engineering and technical needs.
The third interim step would be to obtain training for skills such as advanced
troubleshooting skills and project management. One needs to have skills that will enable them to
run the consulting firm efficiently. They can acquire skills by taking short courses. Consulting
firms should always be ready to solve the problems of the clients. The challenge in obtaining skills
would be inadequate time. One would need to plan for when they will be studying to acquire the
skills.
