Virtue Ethics Essay
The leitmotif of virtue ethics has been a major subject of discussion among numerous
scholars across the globe. It is pertinent to note that virtue ethics is instrumental in human
success and flourishing since it instils positive knowledge to individuals on differentiating vices
and virtues. This paper will critically expound on the concept of virtue ethics as articulated on
Dr. Sommers’ article and Tamar Gendler’s video lecture.
Sommers indicate that modern institutions rarely teach virtue ethics in the required way it
ought to be done. She reveals that most institutions teach ethics to students as matter of reaction
to social contemporary issues rather than putting emphasizes on ethical teachings. Sommers
stipulates that the modern shift is drastically killing the crucial role virtue ethics plays in the life
cycle of students since philosophical educators ignore teaching the elements of virtue ethics.
Correspondingly, Sommers notes that is impossible to teach ethics and avert fundamental
education on individual ethical issues and moral. In support, Sommers (1992) acknowledges the
need to primarily focus on self-ethics first prior to learners discussion on social policies on subjects
like corruption, and abortion.
Normative commitment encompasses things that inform individuals how things should are
performed. In particular, Gendler postulate that normative laws constitute of laws that tell human
the ways things should be executed while the descriptive laws comprises of factual laws, which
directly affect human beings. Consequently, Dr. Gendler in his presentation demonstrates that
becoming virtuous as well as acting in the virtuous manners is the best technique of rounding
normative laws into descriptive laws. Consistency creates perfection hence individuals should
make maximum effort to meet the stipulated standards of what is right and wrong. In the context

of Aristotle argument, individuals comply with the set regulations through accepting to live within
the boundaries and practicing them on daily basis. This means that the progressive act of practicing
aggregates to human conditioning making one get used to behaving and performing in specific
manner.
It is paramount therefore to say virtue ethics is intrinsically mode of human programming.
This is evident since once individuals are introduced in particular behavior, they are able to adapt
to the behavior and continuously behave in the same way. Generally, acquiring and learning ethics
emanates from set regulations and standards, which eventually direct human being lives. This
motif thus challenges the ideology of good human behavior as a subject of personal choice rather
than response without thought.
Substantial evidence as articulated by Gendler in his presentation regarding how virtue is
integrated in human being correlates with Sommers’ argument on what is required in modern
schools. The concept of implementing laws, which individual later forms section of in formulating
their own virtues is evident in the two philosophers’ teachings. Basing my argument on Sommers’
article, I think present universities should enact a channel where morals are taught to students.
Typically, schools should be the foundation of teaching essential morals in the community.
In conclusion, virtue ethics in human being plays key purpose in success because it instils
positive knowledge to individuals enabling them differentiate between virtues and vices as
articulated in on Dr. Sommers’ article and Tamar Gendler’s video lecture. Hence, institutions
should focus on teaching self-ethics before social policies like corruption, and abortion. Of
particular interest, virtue ethics constitutes mode of human programming.
