                                                                  Sexual Abuse with Women’s Health

“Sexual assault and harassment linked to long-term health problems for women” was a study that was published in a news article on CNN October 03, 2018. The research supporting this story was first published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. There were 304 women, ages ranging from 40-60 and who were non-smokers, chosen via advertisements, mailings, and online message boards from Pittsburgh to participate in the study.

Ethical Concerns

I feel as if there weren’t ethical concerns among the researchers. The University of Pittsburgh institutional review board approved the course of action taking place among the participants. Each of the women in the study agreed to sign “informed consent” to take part in it. “Procedures included physical measurements, interviews, and questionnaires. Sexual harassment and assault were assessed from Brief Trauma Questionnaire items developed for the Nurses’ Health Study adapted from the Brief Trauma Interview” (Thurston, Chang, Matthews, von Kanel, Koenen, 2018).

Limitations of Study

“Survey studies, particularly of sexual harassment, largely access physical help via self report” (Thurston, 2018). Bias can take place by participants complaining of physical symptoms, mood, and memory loss. The second limitation of the study was that there are several factors such as socioeconomic status, obesity, and use of other medications. Another limitation is that a survey was used and relied on the participants assessment rather than using measurables that could be validated.

Linked Health Issues

Reports have been made from participants that sexual harassment and sexual assault have been associated with physical and mental problems. Women who have been sexually assaulted expressed a sense of anxiety, high blood pressure, increased depressed feelings, and lack of sleep. This occurred more often than in women who have not been sexual assaulted. “In a sense, the body is telling the story,” said Nancy Kriegar, a Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health professor.

I selected a  YouTube video titled 8 Reasons Marriage is On The Decline. Does It Matter? (April 2017).  This  video is made available through the Health and Wellness Channel.  The text for the video was based on a Cable News Network (CNN) Wire Service. report by Drake Baer, of Thrive Global. (Baer 2017) . The main study the reporter’s article and video are base based on is by Zürich economist named David Dorn  which is titled When Work Disappears: Manufacturing Decline and the Falling Marriage-Market Value of Young Men(2018). The video and report refer to several studies and on the surface the reporter and video accurately represent their conclusions. After examining the actual study referred to, I feel 8 Reasons Marriage is On The Decline. Does It Matter? Is it Overrated?  misrepresents David Dorn’s, work and the conclusions found in When Work Disappears: Manufacturing Decline and the Falling Marriage-Market Value of Young Men (2018). As the video states the study assessed  the socioeconomic impact of the loss of manufacturing jobs.  Dorn referred to building the study building on the work of William Julius Wilson and on other studies  which previously identified the correlation loss of jobs in the coal industry and the rise of single heads of household ( Dorn, 2018).  They built on this studies methodology and demonstrate the same correlation between “labor-market-opportunity” (Dorne 2018)  affect by correlating  changes in marriage, fertility, and children’s living circumstances. ( Dorn, 2018)

When Work Disappears: Manufacturing Decline and the Falling Marriage-Market Value of Young Men (2018) meets the definition of a case study.  David Dorn’s, research was bordered to a specific in-depth observation of “an individual, animal, event, or treatment method.”  (Crawford 2017).  Although the period studied is extensive, and the data gathered was archival and no direct observations were used to gather the information. The study made an extensive use of statistical investigation to create an empirical analysis by mathematical modeling independent variables impact as documented in the public records.  They modeled a negative correlation between the unemployment and marriages recorded  and the number of eligible males in the commute-zone or CZ ( Dorn, 2018)  This mathematical model could be generalized to a population within the United States to predict the impact of  “demand shocks” (Dune 2018) since the study focuses on the general manufacturing impact penetration of Chinese goods into the United States market.  Additionally, the study found a positive correlation between the rise in unemployed due to the loss of manufacturing jobs by young men and their premature morality, idleness other socioeconomic impacts. (Dorn 2018)     I believe that the video makes improper generalizations for larger population since this study does not support to the conclusions the CNN reporter attributes to it. I think this is a good example of the need to examine and beware the bias (unethical) use of research studies.  After reading through the study I am glad that I am taking this class.
