Leadership Approach
The leadership approach used here by Greg Mortenson is authentic leadership style, when
a leader manages his group in a genuine, true, and devoted to his or her principles, he or she is
demonstrating leadership skills. In other terms, he conducts openly and transparently, not just for
the benefit of those he inspires, but also for the benefit of others. Greg Mortenson epitomizes the
qualities of a true leader. As a “thanks” to the Afghan troops for their service, while Greg was
physically incapable to do so, he plans to build a school in Afghanistan. He did not let the notion
that he was a participant in the lawsuit or that he was confronting public wrath prevent him from
preserving his sanity and attempting to be honest with the public.
In my perspective, he is also a reconciliation activist since he wants the case to be
concluded as quickly as feasible. Despite his critical sickness, he was able to retain his openness
throughout the legal proceedings, which is extraordinary in and of itself.
Analyzing Effectiveness
In the majority of cases, when somebody is served with a lawsuit, a range of things may
happen. A brief review of the stress caused by the case, which has been worsened by unfavorable
publicity, is all that is required. Anxiety sufferers are more prone to have a pessimistic attitude
about life. However, I believe it’s incredible that Greg managed to at the very minimum reduce
his damages by consenting to settle the case so soon after it was filed.
Upon considerable soul-searching, the CAI committee and allies concluded that
Mortenson could accomplish far more for Central Asia Institute with him than without him. They
determined that his decades of ties and knowledge were exceptionally significant, making it
difficult—if not unattainable substitute him. They believe they made the appropriate choice,

especially given Mortenson’s current activities on the main lines in Tajikistan, Pakistan, and
Afghanistan as the US withdraws its soldiers from the area. Mortenson played a key role in
CAI’s completion and turnover to the authorities of a 34,000 square-foot academic institution in
one of Pakistan’s most hazardous locations. In addition, he is also leading efforts to improve 26
schools in Afghanistan’s remote Wakhan Corridor.
Real-Life Example
In this scenario, numerous ways might be applied. When Greg is the focus of a lawsuit, I
feel it is conceivable for him to divulge his illness to look more genuine. With an expenditure of
almost $20 million yearly, there is no reason why CAI should not be audited at least once a year.
Annual audits are standard practice for organizations with finances of $500,000 or more, and
several companies with expenditures of merely $300,000 or more choose to have an audit. If the
organization’s budget exceeds $500,000, an audit should be considered. This leads to a bigger
issue: integrity.
Recommendations
The majority feel that exposing his illness would help the general public better
understand the circumstances around his company as well as his situation. It may also act as an
influence on other aspiring entrepreneurs who want to walk in their footsteps in the future.
Stakeholders may see him as lacking honesty since he revealed his illness. He may be disciplined
as a result of this. If his stakeholders become aware of his illness, they may see him as a poor
leader because he is not forthright about the challenges, he is suffering that influence his
stakeholders’ interests.
