Importance of Protocol and a Research Script in Qualitative Research
A Research protocol is an essential aspect of qualitative research as it details the
rationale, objectives, background, design, organizations, study methodology, and statistical
considerations of research. This acts as a guide for the researcher thus ensuring compliance
with outlined methods and the ability to track and evaluate the progress and the results.
Therefore, a research protocol simplifies the qualitative research plan making it a vital
element more so with evidence-based research which is vital in clinical trials. According to
De Cock et al. (2017), it is a single-most-important quality control framework as its
deviations affect research validity.
Most importantly, a research protocol affects the quality of the research in several ways.
First, it enhances a research’s scientific integrity. A research protocol can contribute to a
research’s quality by; controlling variability in scientific research. It controls variability
through the use of experimental methods to account for and control variability (Creswell, &
Báez, 2020). For instance restrictions in participants of an experimental or observational
study and narrowing the health outcomes and exposures under consideration. Secondly, it
prescribes and initiates a study’s documentation process as stated above. When it comes to
studying documentation, this makes a research protocol an asset. Thirdly, it increases the
efficiency of the total work effort. The key to achieving quality is the prevention of problems.
In addition, there are more efficiency gains in addressing issues of documentation and quality
at the protocol stage.
Lastly, a research protocol affects the quality of the research by acting as a
communication link. It acts as a communication link by connecting researchers to other
research team members, peer-reviewers, a funding source, and policy-makers. At the

execution phase, the research protocol can provide a link for uniting the research team “in the
quality chain.”
On the other hand, a research script is essential as well more so in research methods and
identification and evaluation of the research process. A research script has diverse benefits.
To begin with, the script is a vital element in the design of the most significant
qualitative research statements-the purpose statement (Creswell, 2016). Furthermore, they
can also help in designing the research questions. Secondly, a research script is important as
it can serve as a consent form in addition to a guide for recruiting. Thus the script offers
advice to possible participants on the nature of the research before they can make an
informed decision whether to join.
Thirdly, it is vital in both diagnostic and comparative qualitative research purposes for
varied reasons such generation of event-based representations. In addition, its core objective
of obtaining information has facilitated market research methods. Fourth, it offers researchers
an understanding of participant perception thus enabling them to derive accurate conclusions.
Lastly, a research script incorporates methods based on the four-goal levels of qualitative
research: formation of ideas, data collection, data analysis, and findings presentation. With
research script evaluation, researchers can efficiently conceptualize projects and formulate
hypotheses, utilize experimental design methods, code and organize information and make a
conference presentation of the research (Creswell & Creswell, 2017).
