National Growth Plan: Vision 2040, developed by the government of The Bahamas, serves as a guide for the
country’s future development. A complete policy framework is included in the Plan, which will drive
government decision-making and investment over the next few decades.
It was developed by the Economic Development and Planning Unit (EDPU) in partnership with the InterAmerican Development Bank, as well as in close collaboration with the University of The Bahamas and the
Bahamas Chamber Of Commerce and Employers Confederation, as part of the Government of The Bahamas’
Vision 2040 initiative. Intensive study, analysis, and wide-ranging public input have led the development of the
Plan, which is organized around four major policy pillars: the economy, governance, social policy, and the
environment (Natural and Built).
The National Plan is now in its second draft and has not been adopted by Parliament as of this writing.
Ministries, on the other hand, are presently use this tool to direct their work and adapt it to their specific tasks.
The UN Development Programme’s RIA approach was used to align this Plan with the SDGs, and the results
suggest that it has an 88 percent degree of alignment with them.
The monitoring and assessment of the National Development Plan is then carried out by the Economic
Development and Planning Unit (EDPU), with help from the Government and Public Policy Institute of the
University of the Bahamas in the monitoring and evaluation process.
The National Development Plan Vision 2040 is presently in its second form and has not been approved by
Parliament, but ministries are utilizing it to guide their work and adapt it to meet their specific tasks.
