The Economic Development and Planning Unit (EDPU) of the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs are currently collaborating on the national SDG review process. To ensure that all
segments of society are more involved and own the Sustainable Development Goals, institutional arrangements
must be strengthened and formalized. To ensure full ownership of the Sustainable Development Goals and full
integration of the three dimensions of sustainable development in economic, social, and environmental policy,
the Government is establishing a Sustainable Development Goals Technical Committee.
No-One-Behind
Groups and communities marginalized or under-benefited from the country’s successes have been identified.
The National Development Plan’s recommendations and implementation framework for the SDGs include
strengthening these groups’ resilience. For example, it is critical to create programs that address the root causes
of poverty and unemployment. These programs must address the needs of the elderly, at-risk youth, and both
men and women. This includes a gendered lens in policy and program development. Some of the most
vulnerable communities are found on the Bahamas’ sparsely populated islands, as well as on New Providence,
one of the country’s oldest and most historic communities. A pilot for a comprehensive poverty alleviation
strategy focusing on social and economic empowerment, rejuvenation, smart and green technology, and youth
and elder programs has been created by the Government in collaboration with Civil Society, Academics and the
Private Sector.
