There is currently a collaboration between the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
in the Bahamas in the preparation of the country’s SDG review. These institutional arrangements, however, must
be strengthened and formalized to ensure that all segments of society are more involved in and take
responsibility for SDGs. Thus, the government has established a Sustainable Development Goals Technical
Committee, which includes representatives from various government agencies, the private sector, civil society
organizations, and academics, to ensure full ownership of the SDGs and full integration of sustainable
development in economic, social, and environmental policy.
We’re not letting anyone down
There are a number of underrepresented ethnic and racial groups in the United States that have been identified.
The National Development Plan’s recommendations and implementation framework for the SDGs aim to
strengthen the resilience of these groups. For example, addressing the root causes of poverty and joblessness in
the country is critical. These programs must take into account the unique needs of the elderly, at-risk youth, and
men and women alike. A gendered approach to policy and program development is also necessary. With the
most vulnerable communities located on the more sparsely populated islands, as well as in one of the country’s
oldest and most historic communities, The Bahamas has a wide geographic disparity. A pilot program for
comprehensive poverty alleviation, focusing on empowerment of people from all walks of life, revitalization,
smart and green technology, and programs geared toward youth and the elderly, has been established in the
“Over the Hill Community” as a result of government collaboration with civil society organizations, academic
institutions, and private industry.
