It is now being worked on by the Economic Development and Planning Unit (EDPU) in the Office of the Prime
Minister (OPM) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the national process for developing The Bahamas’
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) review, which is currently ongoing. In order to accomplish the
Sustainable Development Goals, it is generally agreed that these institutional structures must be improved and
codified in order to guarantee that all sectors of society are more engaged in, and take ownership of, the
Sustainable Development Goals. To this end, the government is establishing the Sustainable Development Goals
Technical Committee, which will include representatives from various government ministries and agencies, the
private sector, civil society organizations, and academia, with the goal of ensuring that the Sustainable
Development Goals are fully implemented and that the three dimensions of sustainable development are fully
integrated into economic, social, and environmental policy in all of their various manifestations.

geography — for example, some of The Bahamas’ most vulnerable communities are situated on the country’s
most sparsely inhabited islands, as well as on New Providence, which is one of the country’s oldest and most
historic settlements. It was for this reason that the government, working in partnership with civil society, higher
education, and the private sector, established a special zone for a historically marginalized region known as the
“Over the Hill Community” as the pilot for a comprehensive poverty alleviation strategy that focuses on social
and economic empowerment, revitalization, smart and green technology, and programs geared toward youth and
older people.
