OPM Economic Development and Planning Unit (EDPU) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are now involved
in the national process for developing The Bahamas’ SDG review, currently underway. To ensure that all sectors
of society are more involved and take responsibility for the Sustainable Development Goals, it is generally
agreed that these institutional structures need to be improved and codified. This is why the government has
established the Sustainable Development Goals Technical Committee, which includes representatives from the
public and private sectors, as well as academia and civil society, with the goal of ensuring full adoption of the
Sustainable Development Goals and full integration of their three pillars into economic, social, and
environmental policy.
Doing everything possible to ensure that nobody is left behind
People who have been marginalized or who have not reaped the full benefits of the country’s successes are
receiving help. For the SDGs, the National Development Plan’s guidelines and implementation framework
includes the goal of increasing the resilience of these populations as its primary objective. Designing programs
that address the country’s fundamental causes of poverty and unemployment, as well as the consequences of
those causes, is essential, for example. These programs must take into account the unique challenges faced by
the elderly, at-risk children, and men and women. Policy and program design and implementation must be
approached through a gendered lens. On New Providence, the oldest and most historic town in The Bahamas,
there are also significant differences in the nation’s geography, with the most vulnerable villages located on the
more sparsely populated islands. A comprehensive approach to poverty alleviation, involving social and
economic empowerment and revitalization, smart and green technology, and programs for youth and the elderly,
was developed by the government in collaboration with civil society organizations, higher education, the private
sector, and the nonprofit sector as the “Over the Hill Community.”
