The Economic Development and Planning Unit (EDPU) of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs are now working on the national process for developing The Bahamas’ Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG) review. These institutional structures must be improved and codified, however, to
ensure that all sectors of society are more engaged in and own the Sustainable Development Goals. As a result,
the government is forming a Sustainable Development Goals Technical Committee made up of representatives
from various government ministries and agencies, the private sector, civil society, and academia.

Disenfranchised or under-represented groups in the country’s triumphs have been recognized and assisted. The
National Development Plan’s guidelines and implementation framework for the SDGs include a primary goal of
increasing these populations’ resilience. For example, it is critical to design programs that address the root
causes of poverty and unemployment in the country. These programs must address the needs of the elderly, atrisk youth, and both men and women. This means applying a gendered lens to policy and program design and
implementation. Some of the most vulnerable villages are on the Bahamas’ more sparsely populated islands, as
well as on New Providence, one of the country’s oldest and most historic towns. It was for this reason that,
working with civil society, higher education, and business, the government created the “Over the Hill
Community” as an experimental model for a comprehensive poverty alleviation strategy focusing on youth and
elderly programs, social and economic empowerment.
