Second a significant amount copy copy
Second, a significant amount of the activities that take
place in a’society’ are affected by the flows or fluids, which, in
the case of Mol and Law, refer to the competencies,
technologies, interventions, and tacit knowledges of individuals
who are active in the treatment of anemia. The extent and power
of such flows, particularly across societal borders, raise serious
questions about the ability of what Mol and Law term’regions,’
such as the Netherlands or Zimbabwe, to resist. This is
especially true when considering the fact that the fluid may take
different forms as it gorges within or trickles through a
particular region.
Thirdly, what are the consequences of such topologies for
our understanding about what we mean when we talk about
“society”? I will argue that the idea of a region, specifically the
idea that “objects are clustered together and boundaries are
drawn around each particular cluster,” is the premise upon
which the sociological concept of society is based. In other
words, I will argue that the sociological concept of society is
premised upon the notion of a region. Accordingly, it would
seem that there is, for example, a society in Zimbabwe with its
clustering of social institutions and a boundary surrounding it, a
society in the Netherlands with its cluster and its boundaries,
and so on. The following is where I go into additional detail
about the ramifications of my study.
