Action Plan
The action plan will involve first collecting data and information on the cost of nonshows at the cardiac clinic. The data will then be analyzed and costed to provide an estimated
cost of the no shows in terms of financial losses, adverse patient outcomes and readmissions
arising from missed appointments for the patients. The data will inform on the cost of noshows to the hospital, the impact no-shows have on the progress of the patient’s outcomes
and the rate of readmissions for no-shows compared to those who meet their healthcare
needs. A review of literature on the use and effectiveness of the patient portal in minimizing
patient’s missed appointments and in enhancing follow-up care.
A detailed analysis of the situation will be shared with the hospital management to
provide an evidence of the gaps and catalyze the need to implement the intervention. Once
buy-in from the hospital’s management has been achieved, patient sensitization on the use of
the portals for appointments will be done. Posters indicating to the patinets the importance of
adhering to the appointments and directing the patinets on approaches to promote their
compliance to care appointments will be designed and put up in the patient areas.
Baseline data from the clinic will be obtained and data continuously monitored on the
rate of no-shows, the patient waiting time and their patient’s satisfaction of the new system
which allows better and enhanced communication with their healthcare providers. The
process will provide an assessment of the effectiveness of the intervention on enhancing the
patient’s outcomes.
