Sociology operates on the presumption that a society is a
sovereign social unit that, at its core, has a state that is
responsible for coordinating the roles, responsibilities, and rights
of its individual members. In Mol and Law’s terminology,
a’region’ refers to the geographical confines of a society, within
which the vast majority of significant social interaction networks
are understood to circulate. The state has exclusive control over
the area or region of the society, giving it monopoly status in
terms of jurisdiction. It is a common assumption that aspects of
society such as economics, politics, cultures, social classes,
gender roles, and so on are organized. When taken together, they
form a clustering, which is more often referred to as a social
structure.
It is common practice to consider a social structure of this
kind to be composed of both material and cultural elements.
It is believed that this social structure (of society as an area)
organizes and controls the life opportunities available to each
individual member of the society under consideration.
Furthermore, it is considered that societies are self-regulating
entities because of their interaction with one another. These
societies are notably characterized by the ways in which they are
distinct from those of other civilizations. What I refer to as the
north Atlantic rim has been constructed as a system of such
national societies, each of which has distinct borders that
separate it from the other societies that make up its own area.
