Symbolic interactionism essay
Symbolic interactionism is a sociological concept that develops from interactions in
practical considerations and induces certain effects of interaction and communication in
individuals to make images and normal suggestions for interpretation and correspondence with
others. It is a theoretical framework that defines how societies through repeated actions by
individuals are created and maintained. The interpretation of the repeated actions and interactions
between individuals and behavior exposes a shared meaning to the concepts and the minutiae
attached to them. Therefore, meaning is ascribed to the systems, objects, and processes through
symbolic interaction. In this paper, I will critically explore how the flags and rainbow as examples
of symbolic interactionism and their impact on my daily life as a student (Waldbuesser 99-102).
There have existed numerous arguments in the past years over our country’s national flag
and what it symbolizes. To some students, our national flag is seen as a symbol of hope, freedom,
peace, pride, and a sign of national unity. However, the consensus is not clear on the symbolic
meaning of the flag thus several minority groups have raised questions about the symbolic meaning
of the flag and have interpreted it as a symbol of oppression and persecution. The national flag in
my school life acts as a symbol of hope, peace, and unity and it enables peaceful interactions and
unity between other students and other citizens. I turn to It as my symbol of hope during hard times
and times of triumph while in school and at home.

Rainbows have been an indication of rainfall. Currently, rainbows are a symbol of faith
and pride in many societies. It has also been used to portray pride and hope acceptance and equal
rights in marginalized communities. When the sun shines onto the water droplets during a
rainstorm, rainbows appear as attractive and brilliant arcs. In most Christian cultures, rainbows
symbolize better times to come furthermore western culture and art view rainbows as a promise to
better times and as a symbol of hope. More recently, in today’s culture, the diversely colored
rainbow has been used to show diversity in sexuality and thus become a highly recognized symbol
of the gay movement and thus most of their apparel has the symbol of the rainbow. While in school,
the rainbows symbolize hope and better days and it acts as a sign of hope during difficulties in
examinations and other challenges within the school this, in turn, symbolizes togetherness and
pride to enjoy equal rights while interacting with students (Feriyanti et al. 829-836).
Symbolic interactionism is how objects and systems in the society through interactions and
repeated actions are given meaning and their importance in the society in divergent views and how
each community perceives it. Through symbolic interaction, the national flag has been used to
symbolize hope, pride, peace, and a symbol of national unity. The symbol of the flag has also been
used by marginalized societies as a symbol of persecution and oppression. Rainbows significantly
have also been known to symbolize rainfall and as a symbol of hope in Christian societies. The
rainbow colors have recently been used by the gay community as a symbol to indicate the diversity
in sexuality. Therefore symbolic interactionism can be said to be a key aspect of society to give
meaning to different symbols through interactions and how they relate to the symbols.
