The problem
Teach a 12-year-old boy how to wake up on time and get ready for school.
Name
Institution
The problem
Getting the kid to wake up
It is often stressing to find oneself battling
Sometimes kids get left behind by the school bus
Kids skip breakfast due to lack of time
Requirement to instill the virtue of being responsible
Struggling to get kids to wake up and get ready for school can sometimes be extremely
difficult task since most of the times, the kids are often deep asleep in the morning. The
activity could be a nuisance, thus, requires training of the kids and coaching. Training a kid to
wake up and get prepared reduces the burden one would have struggled to get them up and
save time. The parents or guardian of the 12-year-old kid have numerous activities in the
morning. Hence, it is viable to teach the kid at the early stage to wake up in the morning and
prepare for school himself. Also, it is food to ensure the kid have easy time waking up,
having enough time to prepare, and time for breakfast before going to school (Sahithya,
Manohari & Vijaya, 2019).
The skill
• Teach the kid self-responsibility
• Become reliable and easy to count on
• Have the capability of keeping promises
• Meet individual objective and commitment
• Always ensure told as required
The main skill being instilled in the kid is self-responsibility. This ensures that they are
responsible in doing certain activities that they are trusted to execute, for instance, waking up
early and preparing themselves for school with adequate time for breakfast before going to
school. This will also ensure they can be independent and counted on in completing certain
tasks that they are given. Another skill that will be instilled in the kid is developing the ability
to keep promises and meeting personal objectives and commitments. Also, preparing
themselves in the morning, with little time, would ensure that the kid do everything the best
way, since they would have set objectives and timeframe to complete the activity (Burchett,
2017).
Theory
Behaviorism theory is the most effective
It focuses on accurately observable behaviors
Acquisition of new behavior based on environmental conditions
Desired objective can be attained through motivation
Positive reinforcement is key to the learning
The theory that is most applicable for the training is the behaviorism theory, which mainly
focuses on how the students learn. This theory focuses on the notion that all the behavior are
learned via interaction with the environment. hence, it states that the behavior is directly
learned for the environment, hence the inherited and innate attributes have extremely little to
no influence on the learned behavior (Clark, 2018). Teaching the kid on waling up in the
morning and allowing him to directly interact with various challenges that comes with
waking up late in the morning would allow them to learn. Also, positive reinforcements, like
have more time to take breakfast and not being left by the school bus, would solidify the
behavior and ensure the intended learning objective is acquired.
What is approach to a solution and why the theory
• Demonstration of good behavior
• Setting the bedtime for the kid
• Removing all playing toys in the kid’s room
• Provide the kid with incentives
• Theory aids in copying behavior from the environment
It is extremely challenging for the teens to wake up in the morning, especially if they sleep
very late, since they require nine hours of sleep to have the best performance and for their
development. However, despite their natural sleep cycle waking up is an essential life skill
that they should develop. Therefore, setting up bedtime is essential in ensuring that they
attain the needed hours of sleep and they wake up refreshed in the morning. Also, removing
the toys from their room at night would ensure that they go to sleep at the required time and
are not distracted (Clark, 2018). The behaviorism learning model, with the application of
incentives, ensure that the learning objective is attained.
Options
• The theory present numerous options including;
o Making their bed
o Taking breakfast
o Taking a shower
• Provision of positive reinforcement
• Offering various motivation for the learning process
For the proper learning to be achieved, all the activities should be organized. This is mainly
to ensure that the kids learn proper organization, for instance, in waking up and preparing for
school, the kid would begin by waking up in the morning, making the bed, taking breakfast,
and shower among other activities before going to school. The primary aim of the theory is to
guarantee that everything is strategically placed (Burchett, 2017). This is to make them easy
to reach when in a hurry without necessarily straining. Th model also posits that positive
reinforcement and repetition goes hand-in-hand for the learning to take place. Therefore,
offering several motivations in the learning process ensures is mastered.
How to teach this skill according to the behaviorism theory
• Give the desired response or behavior
• Reinforce the behavior
• Ensure that the activities are consistent
• Provide new objectives for new learning
• Being consistent in teaching process
During the learning process, the focus should be on the intended and desired results rather
than the feelings of the kids. Hence, the teen should wake up early and be able to prepare
himself before going to school, and ensure that he is not late for the bus or school. Providing
the teens with incentives would ensure the behavior is reinforced. Further, the learning
process should entail objectives, that is, the new learning should have new objectives, which
will entail the desired results to gauge the learning process (Clark, 2018). This model is
mainly concerned with the results and does not take into account the kid’s feelings and
thoughts. However, the learning process is dependent on the stimuli and incentives presented.
Alternatives
• Apart form behaviorism model, other approaches include
o Humanism
o Cognitivism
o Constructivism
Apart from the behaviorism learning theory, the other theories that can be applied in the
learning process for the kids includes the humanism, cognitivism, and the constructivism.
These learning process would describe the way kids would absorb, the process and retain the
knowledge attained during the learning. Further, the cognitive, environmental, and emotions
influencer and prior knowledge experiences would determine the way of learning
comprehension (Aljohani, 2017). The cognitivism theory mainly focuses on how the
information is received, organized and stored, as well as retrieved by the mind, while the
constructivism model denotes that learners construct knowledge instead of passively taking in
the information.
Cognitivism
Processes involved in learning rather than on the observed behavior
Involves pathways of cognition and the impact of sleep on these processes
Regulating sleep result in later bedtimes,
Sleeping will be driven by school start times
Instruction should be organized and sequenced
The cognitivism is the learning model that mainly focuses on how the information is
received, organized, stored, and retrieved by the individual mind. Thus, it utilizes the mind as
an information processer similar to a computer. Hence, it assesses beyond the observable
behavior, perceiving the learning procedure as an internal mental process. Therefore, the kid
should bee actively involved in the manner they process the information. to ensure effective
learning, the sleep time should be properly regulated and the kid should be aware of the
reputations of going to bed late. Also, the bed time should be aligned with the school start
times to guarantee that he is not late from the classes (Aljohani, 2017). Overall, the
instructions of learning should be organized and sequenced in a way that is comprehensible
and meaningful to the kid.
Constructivism
Posits on constructing knowledge
Learners build their representations
Knowledge is either assimilated or accommodated
Teenagers need nine hours of sleep
Hormones responsible for growth and maturation are released during sleep
The constructivism model is the theory that posits that the learners construct the knowledge
instead of merely passively taking in the offered information. that is, as the learners
experience the world and assess their experiences, they build their representations and
encompass the new information into their pre-existing knowledge. Therefore, the information
attained is either assimilated to the pre-existing knowledge or accommodated. In this case,
the kid will require facts as to why he should wake up early in the morning and go to sleep at
the preestablished timeframe. Such knowledge would be central in making their own
understanding of the situation (Aljohani, 2017). For instance, the teen is needed to have nine
hours of sleep every day, which is crucial as the developmental and maturation hormones are
released during this period.
Why is behaviorism a better approach
Its effective in changing behavior
It requires a few assumptions
The approach will help the teenagers to adapt to waking styles
Once they learn the time and ways of waking up, it hard to forget
Reinforcement would ensure the behavior is not forgotten
In this case, the learning process of waking up and preparing for school is behavioral in
natura, hence it is more viable for the behavioral theory to be implement to ensure effective
learning takes place. The theory also is effective in its ability to define the behavior explicitly
and to measure the changes in behavior. For instance, the desired behavior in the case is
waking up on time, thus, the change in behavior would be the kid being able to wake up at
the required time, getting ready for school, and not being late for the bus. Also, once the
learning on the time and ways of waking and preparing themselves, it is extremely hard to
forget (Clark, 2018).
Action plan:
Pre-set the bedtime
Remove all the toys in his room
Ensure to rise early
Practice waking up the kid with a smile
Adequately prepare at night
For the behavior to be learned, there are certain action plans that should be implemented. One
of the actions is pre-setting the bedtime, which would ensure that the kid goes to bed at a
particular time every day and guarantees the nine hours sleep that is required. Also, the parent
should remove all the distractions from the room, such as toys. Another action plan that can
be taken is ensuring that they wake up early to give them time to wake up the kid, with time
to adequately prepare for school (Albrecht, 2019). Moreover, the parents should adequately
prepare at night to ensure that all kid would need to prepare in the morning, like uniform,
shoes and school bag, are provided and ready.
Cont.
• Practice using gradual lights to wake up the kid
• Try improving the kid’s mood
o Singing for them
o Using musical instruments
Waking up the kid in the morning should be a gradual process to ensure that the kid
understands the time and reason for waking up. Also, the manner of waking up should be a
process from something as simple as the gradual lights to get their attention into waking up.
Also, improving the kid’s mood is essential in ensuring that they are not cracking in the
morning. Improving their moods would ensure they remain active during the day in school
and they master the process of preparing themselves (Albrecht, 2019). This can be achieved
by singing them a song while waking them or using other musical instruments that would
make them jovial and a ritual to long for.
How does the effect of media on learning influence to design action plan
• Application of wake-up calls
• Estimate how long it takes the kid to wake up
• Use of alarm clocks to wake up
• Playing favorite songs in the morning
• Inclusion of favorite programs in the waking ritual
The media can have a direct influence when coming up with effective action plan on waking
the kid in the morning. Thus, it is viable to incorporate its application when designing the
action plan as the kids either directly or indirectly interact with it daily. For instance, the
application of the wake-up calls in the morning or playing the favorite song t get the child to
wake up. Moreover, aligning the waking time with a favorite program for the kids can be plus
and an effective way of waking them up. Also, the teens can have other forms of media like
alarm clock to wake the kid up in the morning (Albrecht, 2019).
Evaluation
Bedtime glitches
Too much daytime sleepiness
Awakenings during the night
Regularity in duration of sleep
Sleep-disordered breathing
The kids who portray all these symptoms mainly shows that they are not having enough
sleep, which is less than the recommended nine hours a night. This is the best strategy in
determining if the action plan is really effective as expected. Hence, if the kid has too much
daytime sleep and bedtime glitches, it mainly shows that the kid did not have the required
hours of sleep and the action plan should be re-evaluated to ensure efficacy. In case of such
instances, a parent or guardian should reconsider their action plan and come up with other
sleeping routines for the kids (Johnson, 2019).
Reflection
Exposure to learn
Depending on others to learn
Development of mind theories
Community on children
Overall, in the previous lessons, I have learned that individuals tend to lean as they are
exposed. In this case, as the children are exposed to new routines, they learn new attributes of
life. also, the kids depend on other individuals mostly the elders to learn new things. Further,
as the children learn new attributes, there is a tendency for formation of theories in their
perception. For this case, the most applicable model is the behaviorism that posits that all the
behaviors are learned through the interaction with the surrounding. Overall, the community
also have major contributions to what the children learn (Johnson, 2019).
