Therefore, while there is something in social life that is “more”
than “individual men and women and their families,” just what
this “more” amounts to is something that is not as clear as it
might be. The majority of sociologists do not share the same
viewpoint about the nature of this’moreness.’
In other places on this website, I have elaborated on at least
eight distinct interpretations of the word “society.” Each of these
interpretations presumes a unique understanding of what it is
that is the emergent quality that produces at the level of the
society something that is in addition to “individual men and
women and their families” (Urry 1995:41). If we were to
question any random group of one hundred sociologists, it is
quite probable that we would not find any of them in accord
with the meaning of the word “society.”
