CASE STUDY:
UNCOVERING THE FACTORS AFFECTING STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC UNDERACHIEVEMENT
Introduction
Every person has a right to education and every person who studies strives very hard and flows down
bumpy roads in their educational journey. Education is difficult and stressful, but one thing that drives
students to continue studying is the academic achievements the students make. Academic achievement
represents performance outcomes that indicate the extent to which a person has accomplished specific
goals that were the focus of activities in school. (Steinmayr, Meißner, Weidinger, & Wirthwein, 2014)
To reach these academic achievements, a student must be dedicated and driven to their studies, no matter
how difficult they may become. Unfortunately, students will occasionally become unmotivated to go to
school for various reasons, and when the students do, the students lose interest in continuing their studies,
which leads to underachievement.
As the final output of the semester assigned by Mr. Lexter P. Rona in the Research I subject, I am
undertaking this case study in an attempt to glance into the world of an academic underachiever and
uncover the factors that affects student’s academic underachievement.
Evaluation of the Case
Teachers and students are frequently blamed for a student’s academic underachievement. Teachers are
criticized for failing to make school interesting, while students are characterized as lazy. Yet, to how far
are we locked within our own assumptions, unable to recognize other options? After glancing inside the
world of an academic underachiever, it is evident that there are factors that influence a student’s academic
performance. Every student has a personal experience, different reasons, and different learning capacities
for which they may have a significant impact, for their unmotivated feelings in school, which leads to
academic underachievement. Parental expectations, societal issues, financial barriers, low self-esteem,
difficulty in the learning environment, and personal stories are all reasons why students underachieve in
school.
Building on mistakes or partly correct answers might help students learn effectively and be motivated.
Instead of underachievement being seen as a sign of failure, underachievement can be viewed as a tool
for students to improve their performance. Teachers, parents, and students all have an impact on whether
or not a student succeeds. When these connections with the school and home are established, effective
transformation for the underachiever is more likely to take place.
Conclusion
The case study was mainly focused on the factors affecting students’ academic underachievement. The
researcher employed strategies to improve student performance in school and to upskill teachers and
parents on how to deal with underachievers. Academic underachievement is influenced by a various of
factors, notably personal stories, therefore we must always consider and understand the students since
they may find it difficult to deal with those stories. But, no matter how frustrating a story or what amount
of capacity a student has, a student may still be great and develop. Through a Dabrowskian lens,
underachievement could mean maintaining subscription in the story that has shaped you or choosing
your own path and rejecting a story that does not reflect your own set of values. (Gifted Education
Program, 2018) Underachievement is not a failure; what matters is the will to keep going.
