Lasell campus resources in an extreme weather emergency that require an unexpected
evacuation.
1) The first option that would be ideal in case of extreme weather emergency in the
Lasell community would be to transport individuals who come first to the safe zones
using the bases available.
Justifications
1. Transporting individuals on a first-come condition will be very beneficial because
the evacuation needs to be done fast, and there is no time for categorizing people
to be transported to the safe zones. Under Kantian ethics, no individual is
exceptional over the other. With this in mind, those that arrive at the buses first
should be the first to be evacuated.
2. Transporting people while considering their gender and age would be
discriminatory because every life is essential, and all people should be considered
in the evacuation process. Virtuous theorists believe that this is the best-case
scenario because waiting for people increase the chases of the evacuation failing,
and this would be stupid.
3. Transporting people who come first to be evacuated will help create a good record
of people remaining and still missing to increase the evacuation process. This will
help the response team to focus resources where they are needed most. Under
utilitarianism, the response should focus on areas with the most significant
number of people to increase the number of evacuations.

1. The focus to evacuate individuals on a fast come basis is not the best option in
this case. This is because an extra workforce could be offered by those who are in
good condition in helping to recover those people that are still missing. Under
utilitarian ethics saving the weak, young, and old fast would be the ideal option in
this case of emergency.
2. The focus on evacuating individuals while considering their age and gender is not
discriminatory. Instead, it will help focus more workforce thaw will help in the
evacuation process. Women and children would slow the process if they remained
longer in the scene.
3. Transporting people on a fast come basis for creating records is not the best case
because time will be wasted asking individuals for their personal information.
Under virtuous ethics, the best solution, in this case, would be to evacuate
individuals that need help first, like people with disabilities and those injured in
the disaster.

1. The fact, in this case, is that individuals need to be evacuated fast and should not
consider their age or gender because all lives matter. The argument of living extra
workforce at the scene is like sentencing them to death. Under Kantian ethics,
every individual’s life matters, and the disaster should not create unique

gender is discriminatory towards men at the scene. All lives should be treated
equally, and men should also be given a chance of surviving the disaster. Under

2. Evacuating re-injured people, children, and the elder will be helpful because
urgent care is available in the safe zones. Under utilitarian ethics, more children
and the elderly can be evacuated more than when all people are included. With
this in mind, this is the best course of action because more lives will be evacuated
and saved.
3. Evacuating children, the elderly, and those judged during the disaster will enable
middle-aged individuals to focus better on evacuating other people stuck in the
disaster areas. Under the virtuous theory, they will help those left with fewer

issues affecting those they love and focus on those that remain in the disaster
areas.

1. This option is discriminatory because it values the lives of children and the
elderly more than the others. Under Kantian ethics, every life is equal, and every
person should be given an equal opportunity of evacuating fast. Instead, people
should be given opportunities based on the values they can provide at the
moment.
2. The argument is biased and not the best option because more resources will be
used because injured people will have to be treated when they reach the safe
zones. With this in mind, healthy individuals and those with status should be
considered first because they have more to offer and less consumption when they
reach safe zones.
3. This argument is flawed because parents will still care if their children and
parents reach the safe zone successfully. Instead, I believe they will be more
prone to making mistakes because they have to worry about their well-being and
their children and parents who left earlier.

1. The option might be discriminatory towards middle-aged people, but this is the
best course of action because they have the strength and will to perform under this
extreme condition of helping in the evacuation process of individuals. Under
utilitarianism, this is the best course of action because it saves more lives and
provides more workforce to assist in the evacuation process.

2. This argument is flawed because every individual has the right to get medical
care, especially in times of disaster. This is the case children, the elderly, and
injured individuals are the most vulnerable hence requiring immediate assistance
and will need to be evacuated first. Under the virtuous theory, individuals will be
necessary to let children and the elderly go first because most middle age
individuals with children and parents would choose this option.
3. This is not true because the first buses have a greater chance of making it to the
safe zone, and parents will feel much better knowing they have tried to help those
they love. Under utilitarianism, the action that created the greatest happiness is the
one. Parents will have that satisfaction and will always choose these options in
this case.
3) The third option would be assigning the evacuation bases based on the percentage of
different age groups of individuals in the disaster scene to ensure every age group
gets equal opportunities in getting evacuated.

1. A certain percentage of every age group will be evacuated in this option, with the
most enormous population having a better chance of survival because they get
more bases. Under Kantian ethics, every individual matters and is thus given an
equal opportunity of being evacuated from the danger zone. This is the best
course of action because many individuals will be saved from the disaster.
2. Assigning buses in relation to the percentage of different age groups is justifiable
because it will give time for people to help in the evacuation process as they make
options of those that will go on the first round. This is a good option because it

gives individuals the opportunity to choose those that get to go and those that will
remain and help in the evacuation process.
3. This is a good option because there is no discrimination between individuals, and
those willing to stay back can help more because it is based on their own free will.

do things themselves. This option gives people what is best for them in such a
disaster.

different percentages. Instead, individuals should focus on issues that can be
resolved fast to ensure individuals are evacuated as quickly as possible. Under
utilitarianism, this is a better option because the fast decision will help save more
people even if not all age groups are included.

choose what is best in their interests. In this case, many will struggle to be
selected to go on the first trip, which might result in more struggle as people strive
to get on the buses. This will result in more suffering instead of being transported
to safe zones.

it will take a lot of time before individuals can agree on the best ways of

lives where good is good and bad is bad. In this case, the good judgment will be
